Perhaps the most important thing about 2010 is—it’s not 2009. The simple fact that a new year brings a new start (at least, psychologically) is something smart marketers should capitalize on.
One way to do this is by shifting emphasis from the Drastic Discount Syndrome of 2009 (“99% Off Everything In Stock!!!”) to a strategy of offering moderate value added extras with your products and services.
Examples of this range from a hotelier offering a free bottle of wine with bookings to a luxury auto dealer offering a free meal at a tony restaurant with every vehicle purchase. The idea here is to shift the perception of value from extreme discounts to enhancements that make consumers feel they are getting a good deal—and more.
2010 is also a good time to remind yourself why people buy your products and services in the first place:
Consumers buy products and services to fulfill emotional as well as physical and material needs. Now—during this emotionally stressful time in our nation—is an ideal time to stress the happiness, security, fulfillment and pleasure your customers can expect from your products and services. This message, which should always be central to your marketing and advertising efforts, is even more important today, given the tone and tenor of the times.
These are just a few of the many strategies we’re implementing for our clients for the upcoming year. We’d be glad to share more of our thinking with you, including solutions for your business.

Patterson/Bach Communications has been selected by Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority (THEA) to provide communication services to the Authority for its conversion of Lee Roy Selmon Expressway to All Electronic Tolling (AET) by September 2010.
“The Authority is extremely pleased with our selection of Patterson/Bach Communications as our consultant for this very important project,” said Susan Chrzan, communications manager for THEA. “The conversion of the Selmon Expressway is an important strategic move for the Authority and a huge benefit to our customers.”
Patterson/Bach was selected from local and national firms to provide strategic marketing communications services, including comprehensive public relations, advertising, marketing, video production and interactive media. The account begins this month, leading up to the AET conversion in September 2010.
“Our team’s experience in marketing transportation organizations allows us to support the Authority in its effort to go cashless,” said Tim Bach, president of Patterson/Bach. “Patterson/Bach understands how to effectively inform and engage target audiences and, in this case, promote the advantages of an AET system, including time- and money-savings, as well as the safety and environmental benefits.”

In the Chinese Zodiac, 2009 was the Year of the Ox. It should’ve been the Year of the Skunk. Unfortunately, 2010 is going to smell a bit like its predecessor.
In the upcoming year, the economy is predicted to make an upswing, but unemployment nationwide could move above 10 percent. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will continue into 2010, and relations with nations such as Iran, China, Russia and North Korea could play an important, yet hard to predict, role in the course of world events. We could also see some silver linings in things such as stable gas prices into the summer of 2010.
At Patterson/Bach, we’re calling 2010 the Year of the Ostrich Removing His Head from The Sand and Taking a Peek Around. Or: the Year of Cautious Optimism. Consumers, we believe, will continue to carefully steward their wealth as a hedge against unemployment and other economic calamities. At the same time, 2010 marks a turning point in the minds of many, and any encouraging developments domestically or internationally could influence consumers to spend more, satisfying pent up demands for things they need—and things they want.
